Students praying at St. Ignatius, Dodoma

 

Dodoma:

JVI: Long Term Specialist volunteers - Motivated by Jesuit Spirituality - Answering needs in the developing world.

JVI have two positions for Volunteers to teach at a St. Ignatius Primary School, in Dodoma, Tanzania, for a school year, starting on July 1st, 2010. Established in 2003 by the Jesuits of Dodoma, Ignatius Pre & Primary School is a private non-profit school with 21 teachers and an enrollment of 285 day scholars in grades pre-primary through primary 7. It proudly provides both educational and spiritual growth. The school has 8 classrooms, 1 television room, and one computer room.

What:
Teaching English and Mathematics. Any expertise in Music would be especially welcome, as well as an ability to teach Science, Social Skills, and to organize Sports programmes.

When:
1 st July 20010– 1 st June 2011. with a six week break from the end of November 2010. ( School year starts mid January and ends in November, with a month break in June. ) It may also be possible to start teaching in Dodoma in mid January 2010.

Where:
At St. Ignatius Primary School, Dodoma (population 324,000), Tanzania. Dodoma is the political capital, and is linked to the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, by regular bus and air service.

Accommodation:
In is in a nearby house, which will be shared with other international volunteers. JVI supports its volunteers with a monthly allowance, and from this volunteers will contribute towards the cost of their accommodation.

Mentoring and Spiritual Accompaniment:
JVI volunteers will join the nearby Jesuit community for prayer and a meal once a week. Each volunteer will also have a Mentor, and who will assist them once a month in reflection on their experience. There will be a Reorientation programme for volunteers mid way through the placement. On their return to Ireland JVI (Ireland) volunteers will be invited to help run JVI, and to engage in other work for the developing world.

Orientation and Language study:
Before departure JVI volunteers will do a five day Pre departure course, be introduced to Jesuit Reflective Practice, and during the placement they will be facilitated in the study of Kiswahili (Swahili), the local language.

Fundraising: Volunteers will be encouraged to fundraise for JVI and for St. Ignatius Primary School.
